Brian Wehlburg and Helen Lewis are currently teaching Holistic Management at Ulladulla TAFE. They bring a wealth of information from years of experience as cattle producers and direct sellers.



Brian and Helen have agreed to join any members intrested in tapping into more of their experience at Bridge Tavern, 87 Bridge Rd, Nowra, after the meeting.

Management committee members - there will be a management meeting at 12.30 at SCC.

 Welcome to a number of new members to the group who attended:
Tim Wilson, Jeff Hoswell, Henry Goodall, Katherine and Danny Vucicevic, Jenni
Manna, Don Mitchell, Greg Mitchell, Ron and Lyn Quigley.

Education Program

  • Attendees asked to complete a survey on education top
  • 2-3 volunteers required for sub-committee. Colin has expressed interest. Andrew Britton volunteered to join also.
  • Draft calendar to be delivered at April meeting.
  • Top Fodder – seeking interest – about half of those present were interested
Shoalhaven Beef Promotion Update

An update on night markets (December, February) and Food Fair in January was provided.
Food Fair was successful but numbers at night markets makes participation questionable.

Upcoming Nose to tail – slow food movement (Mick Hamilton’s beef)
Rural Living website being developed
NRMA community grant of $5000 could be available to SBPA. Due 31/3/2011
Natural Sequence Farming workshop at Braidwood 5th May. Cost to be advised.
Further attrition expected from DII. Brian suggested after election further agitation to keep Berry DII staffed.

Guest speakers
Alison McIntosh – ex MLA (marketing and events) DII – NLIS project officer during implementation. Family farm Angus seed stock.   Services include:
• Use of NLIS for farm planning and efficiency.
• Currently training, TAFE and other. Animal Health & Welfare
• Herd assessment, setting objectives, meeting specifications.
• Bull selection, understanding EBVs.

Kevin Tangye – was a butcher, now an assessor and buyer. Has conducted assessments for some committeee members.
Key points made ...
An animal that wins on hoof rarely wins on hook.
To get consistency on the coast must supplementary feed (does this then go against
Calves tend to cut teeth early on the coast:
Milk teeth, two teeth, four teeth etc
Worth supplementing in last 30-60 days. Loose licks, Manildra syrup, hard feed.

Shoalhaven Food Fair Outcomes

Finally some news about the Food Fair !


 
Assume we have recovered from the Food Fair weekend. A big and very successful couple of days ! Thoroughly enjoyed working with you all.

 
Once again congratulations to all our volunteers who gave up all or part of their precious weekends and travelled from afar and particularly our head chefs, Jennifer Moffit and Brian Tyquin (and his enthusiastic imported team of galley staff) on a fabulously successful job !

 
A big thankyou to those who made such a fabulous contribution of cooking, washing up, preparation, serving, cleaning up to the overall success.

Overall impression. The general sense is that grass fed locally grown beef is now firmly on the agenda with the Shoalhaven 'Market' !

SBPA - 20 August Meeting Summary

Another fabulous gathering at Shoalhaven Council Chambers last Friday.

Attendances are hovering around 20 people and increasing which is fabulous.

Welcome to Rob and Pru Broughton from Broughton Vale to the Association.

Key points from the meeting :
  • Chairman's Report. The SBPA participation at the Shoalhaven Food and Wine Fair 8/9 January 2011. The aim of this activity is to develop consumer awareness of the shoalhaven beef product.This is happening ahead of palpable demand from the local consumer market for quality locally produced beef. We are seeking volunteers for the activities required to make this successful : marketing, distribution network development, fair point-of-sale, food preparation, livestock management, manual labour ( not thespanish tennis player).   • Education Director. DII have met with SDBPA and proposed a fabulous 12 month outlook for  beef enterprise education outline for the Shoalhaven Region. This programme will be published separately for comment. support or other wise. Areas cover Startegic Farm Management, Beef Production Optimisation, Topper Fodder Production,  More Beef from Pastures programme. Enquiries secretary@shoalhavenbeef.asn.au
  • Small Farm Network Opportunities. Andrew Britton  from Small Farms Network has indicated that there exists opportunities of up to $20,000 to support education, small farm projects and community awareness. We enjoyed a fabulously informative talk from Vicki Smart and Amanda Britton from DII Berry about the important aspects of calf production.

Shoalhaven Food and Wine Fair 8/9 January 2011- Opportunity for Shoalhaven Beef Producers'

Shoalhaven Beef Producers' Association will be investing in a stall at the Shoalhaven Food and Wine Fair on the weekend of the 8th/9th January 2011. 

It is reported that the Shoalhaven Food and Wine Fair attracts up to 6,000 visitors over the weekend. This provides a fabulous opportunity to showcase our collective 'clean and green' produce from the local region,  and network with other Shoalhaven Food and Wine industry producers as well as the discerning local consumers.

An enthusiastic sub committee team is working on the project. A project plan is being developed for  Associaton to be discussed at the meeting in July 2010.

We have purchased herbicides from Chris at Goodevans, prices are cheaper then anywhere else we can find give him a call to get his stock and price list

Hi Brian, If you or any other farmers need anything, such as Bromoxynil or MCPA for Fireweed and Thistles, please let me know a.s.a.p. If anyone wants to buy chemicals before the 30th June to minimise their taxation, please ask them to give me a call. If they give me orders, I am quite happy to write up Invoices before the 30th June and deliver the products to them in the second week of July.
